All Men Are Not Equal: Avoid Online Dating Scams

Although trying to get a date online is usually safe, there are precautions to be had because of the many scams that are associated with online dating. Most men who take the online route for dating are looking for precisely what you're looking for. The problem comes in the minority of men who have ulterior motives and little or no conscience. Keep an eye out for these scams associated with online dating to protect yourself.

DO: Look for inconsistencies in the dating profile

It's no secret that many people lie or embellish the truth on a dating profile. What you must be on the lookout for are the important lies - such as claiming to be a doctor at 21 years of age. Needless to say, this just isn't common; your red flags need to go up. A very attractive profile is sometimes so-called "honey-trap" - it's meant to reel in any unsuspecting woman so she is able to be taken advantage of.

DO: Find ways to tell if your online date is married

Although this sounds difficult, there are ways to find out. As you continue talking with him and get to the point where you exchange telephone numbers, if he doesn't want to give you his, then be upfront and ask why. A married man cannot risk his wife answering the phone.

DON'T: Never send money to someone you've only met online

These relationships are often cultivated over time, after the culprit develops a rapport with you. The guy seems like he's really attentive and into you, only to ask you for money for some emergency months later. No real man ever has the inclination to ask a woman he's never met for money, unless he's a scam artist. Beware that sometimes you are approached online by a woman asking the same.

DON'T: Avoid online conversations with supposed business deals

There's no reason why a guy needs to approach you at any time in your online chatting with a marketing idea, where he needs your help. You aren't looking for a broker, after all. This is a very common scam in which a guy presents a limited-time opportunity to you, only to cut and run as soon as you make a deposit.
When it comes to online dating scams, it is your responsibility to protect yourself from the few dishonest men out there. Be vigilant when responding to profiles, and if something doesn't read right, then it isn't worth the trouble. Don't ever get into any business deals where you're sending money to an anonymous person you've never met, because most scams end up with that as the goal.
